Rocky side of Depeche Mode

Posted : 14 years, 11 months ago on 26 May 2009 04:55 (A review of Sounds of the Universe)

Now its here! Depeche modes long waited 12th studio album.

Background:
Since the begging, Depeche mode has told that this is the album, that takes DM "step backwards". In this time, that backstep means that DM is going to use more synthesizer like in the past less guitar and drums. Check those "in the studio clips" from Depechemode.com, Martin Gore has dozens of those old instruments.

And what a massive name the album haves; Sounds of the universe, bit like Music for the masses from the 80's. obviosly Depeche Mode has outgrowed world.

First listen:
This is the weak spot of Depeche mode, as long as the music is playing on background, you propably will feel like its only distubing you - i had this feeling on last 11 albums - and becuse of that, many people may drop DM out. Lucky you, there is a way to fi this; Earphones! just leave everything else behind for an hour, and listen the music.

Once you have the 'phones on, you notice that "step backwards" isnt dramatic as you may expect, Just opposite - there is old-fashioned syntehesizer used to make mordern music!

After last track:
Dave Gahan had strong act thorughout the whole record! Dave just gets better and better, forget Chris Cornell or David Cook, this is what you want! Dave had lot time, which was taken from Martin's and Andrew Fletcher's output, thats pitty and the only fault on album! Just more instumental sections, long intros and this would be 10/10!

Compared to previos Albums, Depeche mode had taken a step to more rocky, vocal based sound, taking SOTU closer to Dave's solo album, Hourglass that previos Depeche mode album . Playing the angel. The whole album was solid package (just like Hourglass again), seemingly, there were no 'weak songs' or songs that i didnt quiet get, you can listen the album without feeling that "i wanna skip this track", Greeeat!

i did leave CD player with smile on my face, Depeche mode is going strong, specially songs Wrong, In chanes, In symphaty and Come back were really jackpots! More radio place, pls!
